Training Competency Architecture
Learnware Design Inc. was awarded a contract by the Canadian Society for Training and Development (CSTD) to establish the standards of professional practice for training and development practitioners and others whose occupation is related to training and development, in order to enhance the credibility, respect and professional status accorded to certified trainers (CTDP designation – Certified Training and Development Professional and CTP designation – Certified Training Professional).
Valerie Dixon, President of Learnware Design Inc., managed the project and together with her consulting team, designed and produced CSTD’s Training Competency Architecture (TCA) and Training Competency Architecture Toolkit (competency self-assessment tools).
CSTD published these standards in 1995 (encompassing five major competency categories for Training and Development practitioners so practitioners and service-users would know the performance criteria that distinguish competent training professionals.
The Training Competency Architecture competency categories are:
- Analyzing Performance/Training Needs
- Designing Training
- Facilitating/Instructing
- Evaluating Training, and
- Coaching the Application of Training.
Valerie Dixon and her team updated these standards in 2001 to reflect the changes in competencies needed by training professionals to support technology-based training design and delivery. See www.cstd.ca for more details and to access the online training competency (TCA) self-assessment tool.
