Case Study - Canadian Tire

Challenge:

Canadian Tire, a large retailer, has an extensive network of franchise stores across Canada, owned by independent Dealers. As part of their Dealer Training Program the Dealer Training team wanted to design and develop a Dealers Process Guide to give to the new Dealers. The Dealers Process Guide would contain the key information every Dealer needs to know about setting up and managing his or her own store.

Process / Solution:

  • Met with a team of Regional Managers, responsible for the on-going coaching of Dealers, to review the learning resources and materials they had compiled to include in the Dealers Process Guide.
  • Designed an overall structure and format for the guide, following the principles of information mapping.
  • Flowed the learning resources and materials through the design template to create a two-volume Dealers Process Guide with sections on Retail Merchandising, Human Resource Management, Inventory Control, Receiving and Warehouse Management, Garden Centre Management, Auto Centre Management, etc.
  • Designed self-checks and module progress checks for the Dealers to complete to assess their own learning progress.

Value-Added Outcomes:

The meetings with the subject matter experts provided opportunities to clarify processes and procedures and more clearly document the most relevant and useful information for the Dealers.

Results:

The Dealers Process Guide is the primary learning resource used before training (as pre-reading), during the classroom-based sessions, and as a tool for supporting each Dealer’s transition to store ownership and management.
