Competence is the ability of an employee to do a job properly. Competencies are a set of defined behaviors that provide a structured guide enabling the identification, evaluation and development of the behaviors in individual employees. So it all starts with identifying the job competencies and then building a Competency Architecture to show how they relate to each other.
Competency Architectures are a performer-centered approach that identifies the level of competence required for different levels of performance within a given work function. Used effectively, they become a roadmap to dramatically higher performance effectiveness. They also support the design and development of learning interventions to increase employee competence.

Competency Architecture Analysis
We work with your internal team of subject matter experts (proficient performers) to identify and document the key competencies for specific jobs in your organization.
A Competency Architecture consists of defined competencies within Competency Categories. There are typically four to six competencies within each of the 8 to 10 Competency Categories.
A Competency Profile is created to describe each competency in greater detail. Competency Profiles are designed to provide a structured framework for the key knowledge and skills demonstrated by competent performers. Your employees need to continuously develop and demonstrate competencies that are valued within your organization and industry.
A Competency Profile is made up of two parts:
- Know and understand: This section outlines the background knowledge employees must have in order to effectively engage in the behaviours necessary to fulfill the competency.
- Do (Behaviours): This section outlines the behavioral indicators employees must demonstrate in order to achieve the competency.
The Competency Architecture is presented as a visually appealing graphic/model. Presentation of the model in graphical form helps users quickly grasp the key features of the Competency Architecture. Competency models provide a structured framework for defining and developing those behaviors that have the biggest impact on an organization’s performance.
